The Newdist Paper of New College, Oxford

About

ABOUT THE NEWT

The Newt comes out with an issue every two weeks during term on Tuesday afternoons. Although we are funded by the JCR, we are entirely independent of it as an institution and do not claim to represent its views.

HOW DOES THE NEWT COMPARE?

The Newt is probably the most professionally run JCR paper in the University. We aim for a high quality and as a result, the paper is eagerly anticipated by students and is read throughout the college on the day it comes out. We are always aiming to maintain and improve upon this high standard.

HOW IS THE PAPER RUN?

The paper is run by The Newt Committee. This is generally made up of the following jobs:

  • The Editor - Collects in the formatted sections from the Section Editors and gets it printed and into your pidges.
  • Assistant Editor - Assists and advises the editor.
  • News Editor - Collects in the articles written for the News section and formats and lays them out in our Publishing programme.
  • Features Editor - Collects in the articles written for the Features section and formats and lays them out in our Publishing programme.
  • MAD Editor - Collects in the articles written for the MAD section and formats and lays them out in our Publishing programme.
  • Sport Editor - Collects in the articles written for the Sport section and formats and lays them out in our Publishing programme.
  • Puzzle Editor - Writes the Crossword and/or any other puzzles we have at the time and sends it to the relevant section editor ready for them to put into their section layout.
  • Copy Editor - Gets the first print of The Newt, reads it through checking for spelling, stylistic, layout errors etc. Returns it to the Editor ready for the final print.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

Come to the meetings, or email editor@thenewt.co.uk

WHEN ARE THE MEETINGS?

We hold meetings that anyone can come to over a two week cycle.

We have a meeting on Tuesdays on weeks when the paper does not come out (odd weeks) - these are commissioning/ideas meetings. If you want to write for The Newt or have a story you think we should be covering these are a great time to tell the editorial team!

On the Thursday after the paper has been published (even weeks) we have a feedback meeting. Again, all are welcome, and we try to go through the paper from cover to cover.

THE NEWT’S HISTORY

The Newt was launched at the beginning of Trinity Term 2004 by a core group of about ten students at New College, Oxford University, which quickly expanded to about twenty and then twenty-five. The Editor, Deputy Editor and Layout Editor joined together again after having produced two sold-out runs of the play “Wit” for their production company, Naked Eye Productions.
